Are you applying to an Italian university and being asked for financial documents about your family abroad? Before paying for a translation, find the procedure required by your university or the organisation awarding the benefit. This guide gives you a preparation checklist and questions that can help you avoid requesting the same document twice.
Use it for orientation. Your official procedure determines the final document list and deadlines.
Before requesting documents
- Who this is for
- Students with a family or financial situation abroad, including Italians abroad where relevant.
- Where to start
- The call and instructions from your university or the organisation awarding the benefit.
- What you will prepare
- A checklist to compare with the official list and a message to the responsible office.
- Scope
- No universal list of documents, exemptions, fees or deadlines.
Section 1
Where to start: nationality is only part of the picture
Universities use ISEE parificato, also called ISEEU parificato, to assess financial circumstances involving other countries. ISEE stands for Indicatore della situazione economica equivalente, an indicator of a household's financial circumstances.
For example, Politecnico di Milano directs students with foreign income or assets to an affiliated CAF, a tax assistance centre. Calling yourself an expat does not determine which assessment you need.
Foreign nationality does not always mean you need a parificato. ER.GO also identifies the situation where a student's household lives and has income and assets entirely in Italy. Start with your household, residence, relevant countries and the benefit you are applying for.
| Your situation | Your first question |
|---|---|
| You study in Italy and your family lives abroad | Which foreign documents are required, and who receives them? |
| You are Italian and live abroad | Does the call cover your circumstances, including registration with AIRE, the register of Italians living abroad? |
| You live alone or work | Do you meet the independence requirements for this benefit? |
| You are moving to Italy but not applying for student benefits | Start with the benefit's own instructions and the general ISEE guide. |
This table helps organise your questions; it does not automatically assign an ISEE category.
Section 2
ISEE UniversitΓ : living alone does not establish independence
University benefits use specific household rules. Independence involves both housing and financial conditions; changing address is insufficient.
The Italian DSU (Dichiarazione sostitutiva unica, the declaration used for ISEE) also includes provisions for foreign assets, so a bank account abroad does not automatically rule out an assessment by INPS, Italy's social security institute. Ask the responsible CAF to check your circumstances.
Section 3
Which year should your documents cover?
Record the academic year, income year, asset date and required issue date separately. They mean different things.
Padua's 2026 guide refers to financial data from 2024 and sets requirements for when certificates are issued. Do not apply that example automatically to another institution.
ER.GO's general documentation page instead refers to the preceding year and displays a 2025 update. For a current application, check the call for your academic year. This difference is a practical reason to verify an online checklist before using it.
Section 4
Checklist: documents needed from your home country
Compare this preparation list with your institution's requirements. Some items may not apply to you.
| Document or information | What to confirm first |
|---|---|
| Identity, Italian tax code and university identifier | Which identifiers does the portal require? |
| Household composition | Included relatives, relationships and certificate date |
| Each household member's income | Reference year, currency and accepted evidence |
| No income | How must this be documented? |
| Accounts and other financial assets | Balance date, any annual average balance and holders |
| Buildings and land | Ownership shares and required area or value information |
| No property | Explicit evidence for relevant relatives, where required |
| Particular family circumstances | Relevant separation, death or other supporting records |
These categories draw on official lists from Padua and Politecnico di Milano.
- Padua β 2026 ISEE guide, Annex 1 (Italian)
- Politecnico di Milano β Foreign income and assets (Italian)
Your home country may not be the only relevant country. If your family earns income or owns assets elsewhere, check which records are needed from that jurisdiction too.
Section 5
The legalisation and translation trap
A readable translation may not meet formal requirements. Translation and authentication of the original serve different purposes.
Before commissioning either, ask who may certify the translation and which formalities apply to the original. MAECI, Italy's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, explains consular procedures and the distinction between legalisation and an apostille.
| Formality | What you need to establish |
|---|---|
| Legalisation | Which authority is responsible for this document and country? |
| Apostille | Does the Convention apply between the countries and to this document? Check its status and designated authorities. |
| Certified or sworn translation | Which form does the recipient accept? Do not assume interchangeability. |
| Exemption | Does it cover this document or only certain categories? |
Where the 1961 Hague Convention applies, an apostille replaces traditional legalisation. The HCCH, the Hague Conference on Private International Law, provides an Apostille Section.
An apostille authenticates the document's origin, not its contents. It therefore cannot fix the wrong reference year or missing information. That is the practical implication to remember before spending money.
Authenticating a translator's signature also does not automatically replace authentication of the original document. ER.GO explicitly distinguishes these requirements and explains that exemption from legalisation does not necessarily remove translation requirements.
European Union (EU) simplifications cover specified public documents, including various civil-status and residence records. Do not extend them automatically to bank or income certificates. Check any additional exemptions separately.
Section 6
Ask these questions before paying
You can adapt this message and send it through the institution's official contact channel.
Keep the reply with the official instructions. Ask for separate quotes for document issuance, authentication, translation and any delivery. This makes it easier to compare costs without confusing different services.
Section 7
Submitting documents may not complete your application
Check the benefit application as well. At Padua, for example, the process includes the affiliated CAF and confirmation of the application for benefits through Uniweb.
Channels, steps and deadlines depend on the institution and benefit.
Organise the process
Check the list
Start with the applicable call and instructions to identify the list and deadlines you need to follow.
Collect and check
Compare years, household members and information with the list before completing the required formalities.
Use the specified channel
Submit your documents and save your submission receipts.
Check your application
Confirm it has been submitted and check requests for corrections. A successful upload is not the same as acceptance of your application.
Section 8
If you get stuck
Ask the responsible office how to proceed, without assuming that an alternative document or a late submission will be accepted.
| Problem | A useful question for the responsible office |
|---|---|
| The authority does not issue the requested certificate | Which alternative document is accepted in my circumstances? |
| Your bank does not provide the requested average-balance format | Which information and evidence do you accept for this account? |
| A translated document is missing a formality | Do I need a new translation, or can I supplement the file? |
| The portal reports an error | Which file or field needs correcting, and how do I retain proof of submission? |
| A deadline is approaching | Does the call allow later documents, by when and with what consequences? |
These are questions to ask, not approved alternatives. If international protection or a documented inability to contact your country's authorities affects you, ask the institution about the specific procedure first.
Section 9
Frequently asked questions
Eight questions to resolve before ordering documents and translations.
Does every foreign student need an ISEE parificato?
No. The procedure and household circumstances matter, not just nationality. See ER.GO's distinction in section 1.
I am Italian and live abroad. Is this guide relevant to me?
It can be if you are applying for student benefits. Padua includes Italians living abroad; check your own institution's instructions.
Can I leave my parents out because I live alone?
Not automatically. Independence must be assessed under the university rules explained in section 2.
Will a document in English be enough?
Do not assume so. For example, ER.GO requires an appropriate Italian translation in the cases described in its instructions. Check your institution's accepted language.
Does an apostille mean I can skip the translation?
An apostille is not a translation. Check the language requirement and any exemption separately. See section 5.
Can I use any CAF?
Check first: Padua requires its affiliated CAF. Do not assume that every assessment is accepted by every university.
How much will it cost, and how long does it take?
There is no single quote for the complete process. Ask each provider about its fees and times. Apostille charges depend on the competent authority.
Does obtaining the assessment automatically give me a scholarship?
Do not treat the application as complete. Check the benefit's eligibility requirements, application and deadlines. Padua expressly separates applying for benefits from obtaining the ISEE.
