Voting away from home in Italy: eligibility and deadlines

Identify your category, the responsible municipality and your deadline before completing the form.

Important information

Percorso Cittadino helps you understand Italian administrative procedures but does not replace public authorities. Before submitting applications or making decisions, always verify the official institutional links provided on this page.

If you are on an Italian municipality's electoral register and temporarily live in another region for study, work, treatment or qualifying care, check your category before applying. Apply to your temporary-domicile municipality using its official notice.

Law 180/2026 covers parliamentary and European elections and referendums under Articles 75 and 138 of the Constitution. It excludes municipal and regional elections and does not let you choose any polling station.

Before you start

Common condition
Temporary domicile in a different region from your electoral registration
Study or work
Expected stay of at least nine months
Treatment or care
At least three months including polling day, in qualifying cases
Registration
Annual: a new application is needed for the following year

Section 1

Which category applies to you?

Study/work and treatment/care have different requirements. Your temporary domicile must be in another region.

ReasonCondition to document
Study or workExpected stay of at least nine months in another region.
TreatmentHealthcare, therapy or medical treatment at a healthcare facility for at least three months, including polling day.
CareQualifying family caregiver under Law 205/2017 or a parent/cohabiting relative of a minor receiving treatment: at least three months including polling day.

A trip, holiday or simply living in a different municipality does not establish these requirements. For a care-related case, check your category and evidence with the electoral office.

Section 3

Apply to your temporary-domicile municipality

Use the form, submission address and instructions provided by the electoral office where you are temporarily domiciled.

  1. Find the municipal notice

Search the official website for voto fuori sede or elenco elettori fuori sede. Check category, year, deadlines and contacts.

  2. Prepare the form and evidence

State your electoral-registration municipality, full temporary address, reason and period. Attach valid ID and evidence; use self-declarations where and as permitted.

  3. Submit and retain proof

Deliver in person or use the electronic channel specified by your municipality. Keep the application, attachments, receipt and protocol number if issued.

Taggia's published forms are institutional examples; its contacts are not a nationwide application address. If your local notice is missing or unclear, contact your temporary-domicile electoral office before the deadline.

Section 4

Admission, polling station and documents

Submitting the form is not enough: check your admission certificate and assigned polling station.

For admitted applicants, the municipality issues the certificate no later than ten days before polling day, including electronically, with the station number and address. You vote for lists and candidates in the constituency and district of your temporary domicile.

Bring valid ID, the admission certificate and your personal electoral card or replacement certificate. If admission has not arrived, contact the office with your application references.

Withdrawal follows the same methods and deadlines as the application. If refused, the municipality gives reasons; you retain voting at your ordinary electoral-registration municipality. Ask the office how to handle corrections or changes.

  • I identified the category, expected duration and application year.
  • I checked my deadline and the municipality's current notice.
  • I prepared ID, evidence and the current form.
  • I retained proof of submission.
  • Before voting I will check admission, station and electoral card.

Section 6

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions.

Must I already have spent nine months away?

For study or work the instructions require an expected stay of at least nine months. Document your actual situation and check your category's deadline.

Can I use this for regional elections?

No. It covers parliamentary and European elections and referendums under Articles 75 and 138; municipal and regional elections are excluded.

Is PEC always required?

Applications can be made in person or electronically under municipal instructions. Check your office's accepted channels; PEC is not assumed mandatory for everyone.
