If your child was born, adopted or placed with your family in pre-adoption foster care in 2026, check the Bonus nuovi nati: a one-off €1,000 payment, requiring an INPS application and nationality, residence and ISEE conditions. Start with the event date and check the submission deadline immediately.
For events after the service opened on 14 April 2026, the ordinary deadline is 120 days. The special 12 August deadline applied to earlier events and has already passed. This guide helps you prepare documents, apply and follow the decision, while keeping this benefit separate from AUU and Bonus nido.
What to check first
- Amount
- One-off €1,000 payment for each eligible child
- 2026 events
- Birth, adoption or pre-adoption foster placement from 1 January to 31 December
- ISEE
- Specific indicator applicable to the child, with AUU neutralised: no more than €40,000
- Ordinary deadline
- 120 days from the relevant event; late submission means loss of entitlement
- Applicant
- One parent; if parents do not live together, the parent living with the child
- Submission
- INPS website, INPS Mobile, Contact Center or patronato
Section 1
Where to start: event, deadline and application
Prepare a new claim or check one you have already submitted. Start with the relevant date, rather than when you first heard about the bonus.
Identify the event
Note the birth, entry into the family or registration of an international adoption. Use the events table to choose the correct date.
Check the 120 days and eligibility
Check continuous residence, nationality or qualifying permit, and the child's applicable ISEE. If the certificate is pending, check that you have already submitted a DSU including the child.
Submit and keep the receipt
Open the service for 2026 events, complete the application and check that it has been transmitted. A draft or an assistance enquiry is not a submission receipt.
Section 2
Amount, eligible children and tax treatment
The contribution is a single €1,000 payment for each eligible child. It is neither a monthly instalment nor reimbursement of expenses.
It is not restricted to your first child. If the events concern more than one child, submit a separate application for each. Parents claim as alternatives to one another: it is not €1,000 for the mother plus €1,000 for the father.
The Bonus nuovi nati does not count towards total income for Article 8 of the Italian Income Tax Code, TUIR. Payment remains subject to INPS checks and allocated funding: this guide does not certify personal entitlement or remaining funds.
Section 3
Who submits the application
Choose the parent who meets the conditions. If the parents do not live together, the applicant must be the parent living with the child.
- Either parent can claim as an alternative to the other; coordinate submission to avoid duplicates.
- For a parent who is under 18 or lacks legal capacity, the application is submitted by that parent's own parent exercising parental responsibility, or by a guardian. Eligibility is checked against the baby's parent.
- Manage any digital-identity delegation through the INPS process: do not share passwords, PINs or one-time codes with someone helping you.
Section 4
Nationality and residence permits
Qualifying nationality or immigration status, residence, the event and financial eligibility must all be met. Do not automatically use another benefit's permit list.
| Circumstances | Condition to check |
|---|---|
| Italian national | Italian nationality and the bonus's other conditions. |
| EU national or family member | Right of residence or permanent residence. Non-EU family members: the residence card under Articles 10 or 17 of Legislative Decree 30/2007. |
| Non-EU national | EU long-term residence permit; or a single work permit authorising work for more than six months; or a research permit authorising residence for more than six months. |
| Other non-EU permits | The circular also admits permits lasting at least one year: check the category, duration and validity with INPS or a patronato. |
| Stateless person, refugee or holder of international protection | Treated as an Italian national for the bonus under the circular's legal references. |
| UK national | Residence in Italy by 31 December 2020: treated as an EU national under INPS conditions. Later residents follow the non-EU immigration-document rules. |
Section 5
Residence of the parent and child
The application requires continuous residence in Italy for the applicant and child from the event date to submission.
The circular distinguishes checking the parent's residence and declaring continuity for both applicant and child. Checking only the address on the submission date is insufficient.
If you have moved between Comuni, returned from abroad or the newborn's details have not been updated, compare the dates with the population register and ask INPS or a patronato to assess the situation. Moving after the event does not by itself establish continuous residence.
Section 6
Birth, adoption and pre-adoption foster care
For the 2026 scheme the qualifying event must fall between 1 January and 31 December 2026. For adoption or pre-adoption placement, the child must be under 18.
| Event | Reference date | Point to check |
|---|---|---|
| Birth | The child's date of birth. | Update the DSU to include the new household member. |
| Pre-adoption foster placement (affidamento preadottivo) | Entry into the family under the Juvenile Court placement order. | Do not wait for the final adoption judgment before checking the deadline. |
| Adoption without a prior pre-adoption placement | The adoption event and entry into the family according to the relevant records. | Have the date checked if documents refer to different stages. |
| International adoption | Registration of the adoption order in the Italian civil-status registers. | Do not replace this with the travel date or the foreign order date alone. |
Other forms of foster care must not be treated as pre-adoption foster placement for this purpose. If adoption follows a pre-adoption placement already covered by a claim, have that existing claim checked before submitting another.
If the child died before the application
The circular provides for the bonus where, before the child's death, a DSU including the child was submitted for ISEE minorenni and certified without omissions or discrepancies. Ask INPS or a patronato to check records, eligibility and the deadline: this circumstance does not automatically create an exception to the 120 days.
Section 7
The child's 2026 ISEE and neutralising AUU
The relevant value is the specific ISEE for family and inclusion benefits applicable to the child, with AUU payments neutralised: it must not exceed €40,000.
ISEE is Italy's indicator of a household's economic situation. The DSU, Dichiarazione sostitutiva unica, is the declaration used to calculate it. Check that the child is included and that the indicator applies to benefits for minors; if parents are unmarried and do not live together, ask a CAF tax-assistance centre to check household rules.
To submit, you need the relevant valid ISEE or must have already filed a DSU for ISEE minorenni including the child. Prior DSU submission allows you to apply while the certificate is pending: it does not remove the threshold or checks, and is not a reason to wait until the last day.
The circular's example, not an entitlement calculation for you
AUU adjustment: €3,100 ÷ equivalence-scale parameter 3.10 = €1,000
Specific ISEE €41,000 − €1,000 = €40,000
Neutralisation uses the equivalence-scale parameter. Do not subtract the whole AUU from the ISEE or apply the adjustment twice if the correct adjusted value is already being used. Have INPS or your CAF check the official indicator.
Section 8
Your individual deadline: understanding the 120 days
Late submission means loss of entitlement. Count from the relevant event, rather than from the ISEE certificate or tax-code issue date.
| Circumstances | Deadline | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Event before the service opened on 14 April 2026 | 12 August 2026 | This special deadline has passed as of 13 October; it was not the deadline for every child born in 2026. |
| Event from the service opening | 120 days from the relevant event | Birth, entry into the family or registration for an international adoption. |
| INPS example: event on 16 July 2026 | 13 November 2026 | The explicit example in Circular 45/2026. |
| Event late in 2026 | The count can extend into 2027 | Arithmetic example: 31 December 2026 + 120 days = 30 April 2027. Check the service's event year and valid ISEE at submission; this is not guidance for 2027 events. |
As a practical precaution, put the event date and deadline in your calendar, with an earlier reminder. Check the count with the service or a patronato, especially if adoption records contain several dates.
If the deadline has passed, the sources checked do not document a general extension. Read any decision and ask INPS which remedies apply to your circumstances; an assistance enquiry is not a timely application.
Section 9
Details and documents to prepare
Gather what you need to complete the application and support your circumstances. This list distinguishes useful details from conditional attachments: not every document is uploaded with every claim.
- Applicant and child details and codici fiscali, contact details and correct population-register dates.
- Event date and type; for adoption or pre-adoption placement, relevant records and order details; for international adoption, registration details.
- The child's applicable ISEE or receipt for an already-submitted DSU including the child. Check and update a DSU filed before the birth.
- Where relevant, the residence permit and, if expired, renewal-application details and receipt or renewal slip.
- Chosen payment method and IBAN if using a bank-account payment; check account ownership and details requested by the service.
- For a SEPA IBAN outside Italy, INPS financial-identification form MV70 if not already provided to INPS for previous payments.
- If acting for a parent under 18 or lacking legal capacity, relevant representation or delegation records and procedure, to check with INPS or a patronato.
This is not a nursery-fee reimbursement claim: the newborn-bonus instructions do not require monthly nursery invoices. Keep originals and upload only the attachments requested for your case. Do not send personal information or documents to websites promising the bonus outside official INPS channels.
Section 10
How to submit the INPS application for 2026
Use the INPS website, the INPS Mobile function, the Contact Center or a patronato assistance service. You must apply even if you already receive AUU.
Open the official service
On the Bonus nuovi nati page, choose the service for 2026. Sign in using SPID level 2 or higher, CIE 3.0, CNS or eIDAS; a separate 2025 service exists for 2025 events.
Enter the event, child and eligibility details
Provide the requested details and declare, under your responsibility, nationality or permit, event, continuous residence and valid ISEE or a DSU already submitted. Complete separate claims for more than one child.
Choose payment and relevant attachments
Check the IBAN or bonifico domiciliato payment option, any details already registered in SUGI and MV70 when required for a non-Italian SEPA account.
Transmit and retain the records
Check submission and download the receipt, application identifier and copy. Return to the service to follow processing and messages.
For the Contact Center: 803 164 from a landline, free; 06 164 164 from a mobile, charged at your provider's rate. Authenticated services and personal-case information require a temporary telephone PIN generated in MyINPS. If using a patronato, check that transmission took place within the deadline and request the receipt.
Section 11
Decision, IBAN and payment
The service lets you access receipts and records, follow the status and update payment-method information when necessary.
The circular provides for payment to an account with an IBAN or through bonifico domiciliato, a payment made available for collection. SUGI, Sistema unico di gestione IBAN, lets you select an IBAN already registered for other benefits or enter a new one. For a SEPA IBAN outside Italy, MV70 is required if not already supplied.
INPS pays accepted claims in chronological order of arrival, after checking eligibility and within the funding for the submission year. The service page gives 30 days as the ordinary decision timeframe: this is not a promise to receive the money within 30 days.
If the account is closed, the IBAN is incorrect or payment is missing, check registered payment details, status and messages before requesting assistance. Keep the application identifier available. INPS percentages published in May do not describe your claim or current waiting times.
Section 12
Common problems: what to check
Separate form errors, eligibility checks and missing payments. Submitting a duplicate application is not an automatic fix.
| Problem | Check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Child missing from the DSU or displayed details | Tax code, population-register records and the DSU household. | Comune for registration details; CAF/INPS for DSU and ISEE. Check the bonus deadline separately. |
| ISEE with discrepancies, inconsistent details or above €40,000 | The child's applicable indicator, details and AUU neutralisation. | Ask CAF/INPS to correct or check it; do not manually change the value or assume a minimum payment. |
| Expired permit or unrecognised category | Category, duration, validity and renewal receipt. | INPS or patronato to check the qualifying permit and required declarations. |
| Application still a draft or portal error | Whether a transmission receipt exists. | Before the deadline, consider the Contact Center or a patronato. Keeping the error can help assistance, but does not prove submission. |
| Rejected claim or expired deadline | Reason, event date and submission date. | Read the channels and deadlines in the decision; ask INPS or a patronato about available checks or review, without assuming extensions. |
| Claim being processed or payment stalled | Requests for further documents, decision and payment method. | Respond through the specified channels; check IBAN/MV70 and seek assistance with the claim identifier. |
Outline for requesting help through an official channel
‘Please check my Bonus nuovi nati 2026 application, identifier [claim number]. The event was on [date] and I submitted on [date]. The service shows [status/reason]. I have checked [DSU/event/payment]. Which details or documents need correcting or adding, and through which procedure?’
Provide information and attachments only through the relevant INPS or patronato channel. Do not share passwords, PINs or one-time codes; this outline does not submit an enquiry or suspend deadlines.
Section 13
Newborn bonus, Assegno unico and Bonus nido
A child's arrival can involve several benefits. Each application serves a separate purpose: check each route without automatically transferring its rules.
| Benefit | Purpose | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus nuovi nati | One-off €1,000 for an eligible event, with specific ISEE up to €40,000 and a 120-day deadline. | It is not AUU and does not reimburse nursery fees. |
| Assegno unico e universale (AUU) | Support for dependent children, with varying amounts and its own rules on children, ISEE and claim management. | An AUU claim does not submit a newborn-bonus application. AUU neutralisation concerns the prescribed ISEE calculation, not one benefit replacing another. |
| Bonus nido and support at home | Support for documented fees or a home-support route for serious chronic illness, subject to specific conditions. | A nursery claim does not automatically satisfy newborn-bonus eligibility, documents or deadlines. |
Section 14
Checklist before submission
Use this list to check your preparation. It does not certify acceptance or replace INPS checks.
- I have identified the event and relevant date in 2026.
- I have checked the individual or transitional deadline without confusing them.
- The applicant is the appropriate parent; I have checked who lives with the child if the parents do not live together.
- I have checked nationality or a qualifying permit, including renewal details where needed.
- I have checked continuous residence for applicant and child from the event to submission.
- I have a relevant valid ISEE or have already filed a DSU including the child; the financial threshold must still be met.
- I have checked the payment method and MV70 if needed for a non-Italian SEPA IBAN.
- I have prepared the records and attachments relevant to my circumstances.
- After transmission I keep the receipt and copy; for multiple children I check a separate claim for each.
Section 15
Frequently asked questions
Answers to questions that can change your next step.
Is the newborn bonus only for your first child?
No. It covers each child with an eligible event in 2026, subject to the requirements. For more than one child, including twins, submit a separate application for each; not one application for each parent.
Can I apply while waiting for my ISEE certificate?
Circular 45/2026 allows submission if you have already filed a DSU for ISEE minorenni that includes the child. Keep the DSU receipt and check the details. Submission does not replace the financial-eligibility check or guarantee acceptance.
Was 12 August 2026 the deadline for everyone?
No. It applied to events before the service opened on 14 April 2026. For later events the ordinary deadline is 120 days from the birth or relevant event. For an international adoption, the reference date is registration of the adoption order in the Italian civil-status registers.
Is an ISEE of €40,000 allowed?
The threshold includes €40,000, but you must check the specific ISEE for family and inclusion benefits applicable to the child, with AUU neutralised. Do not replace it with annual income or manually subtract the whole Assegno unico payment.
Can I apply while my residence permit is being renewed?
If the qualifying permit has expired, the circular requires you to declare the renewal application and give the receipt or renewal-slip details. Ask INPS or a patronato to check the permit category and your circumstances: renewal does not remove the other conditions.
Do I need receipts or invoices for baby expenses?
The newborn-bonus instructions concern eligibility, the event, child details, ISEE and payment; this is not nursery-fee reimbursement. Prepare the relevant records and any attachments requested by the service, including MV70 for a non-Italian SEPA IBAN if not already supplied.
How long does payment take?
INPS pays accepted claims after checks, in chronological order and within the available funding. The service page gives 30 days as the ordinary decision timeframe, not a guaranteed bank-payment date. Check the status, messages and payment details in the service.
Does an AUU or nursery-bonus claim automatically submit this application?
No. These benefits have their own applications, eligibility and deadlines. An AUU or nursery claim does not replace the Bonus nuovi nati application or extend its 120-day deadline.
